Non-Toxic, Solid Wood Bunk Beds | Eco-Friendly, Hardwood Bunk Beds
At Maine Bunk Beds, we use non-toxic, eco friendly and high quality materials to design our solid wood bunk beds that are safe for both kids and adults. We craft our hardwood bunk beds with stability and solidity in mind with rich, toxic free paints to assure complete safety and top quality finish.
We only use natural, toxic-free materials in our beds and furniture. Our beds are naturally sustainable and are built to last for decades, if not generations. In addition, we believe that true sustainability extends beyond the materials we use and into our business practices. Sustainability permeates all activities within our business, like sourcing woods and other materials locally and disposing of waste materials responsibly. We donate all of our sawdust to local Maine dairy farmers for use as cow bedding. And since there is no toxic glue or formaldehyde in our beds, our scraps and cutoffs are used in woodstoves to fend off chilly Maine nights.
Our beds are made from solid hardwoods. They are designed to be safe for kids, but are built for adults, i.e. they are strong, stable, sturdy and safe. While most bunk bed companies use soft woods like pine, we use poplar—a sustainable, locally sourced, renewable hardwood. North American poplar (or Tulipwood) is fine-grained and stable, making it easy to work with and well-suited for high-quality finishing. Hard Maple and American Cherry are available on special request.
We use oversized bed rails and 3 1/4” square corner posts. Except for architectural bolts used to attach the rails to the corner frames and unexposed structural screws used to join the rails to the headboards and footboards, we do not use any metal in our beds: no metal plates, braces or angles that are frequently used to reinforce inferior products.
The mattress base used on our beds is either a set of slats wrapped in cotton muslin, or a formaldehyde-free plywood sheet that is NAUF-rated (no additional urea formaldehyde). We never use particle board or composite material in our beds.
As part of our passionate commitment to the safety of children and the environment, we only use toxic-free paints on our beds. Our paints are Greenguard-certified, meet strict standards for indoor air quality, are fully compliant with environmental standards set by the California Air Resources Board, and are formaldehyde-free. They complement clean living environments by adhering to zero emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
We use water-based Clay Paints to finish our beds and furniture. Our 16 favorite colors of Clay Paint can be see in the Colors section. An additional 20 non-stock Clay Paint colors are available by special request. We apply two coats of paint to our beds, and hand sand the bed after each coat is applied. We finish the bed with water-based clear lacquer that protects the finish and minimizes smudges and scratches.
Lacquers & Stains
If you prefer to see the natural beauty of wood, we use a Greenguard-certified, water-based lacquer called Aqualente to showcase the grain of the wood while providing a long-lasting, scratch resistant finish. Aqualente lacquer protects the wood while enabling a depth and clarity to the finish that endures over time. Our specialized finishing process produces a highly durable, water-resistant, and easily maintained wood surface.
If you prefer a custom shade, we offer a selection of wood stains. Our stains are Greenguard-certified and have outstanding wood grain penetration and color depth. After staining, we seal the wood with a clear coat of Aqualente lacquer that helps to amplify the beauty and texture of the wood.
If undecided, your choice of a finish and color can be finalized after your order has been placed. In the interim, our finishing experts can provide you information to help you make the best decision for your new beds and furniture.
