Eco-Friendly Bunk Beds | Organic Bunk Beds

Safety

Our bunk beds are designed to be compliant with safety standards established by the Consumer Products Safety Commision. Our paints and finishes are compliant with standards set by the California Air Resources Board regarding air quality.

Eco-Friendly

We only use eco-friendly materials in our beds and furniture that are fully compliant with stringent regulations set by the California Air Resources Board. Our solid wood bunk beds are naturally sustainable and are built to last for decades, if not generations. In addition, we believe that true sustainability extends beyond the materials we use and into our business practices. Sustainability permeates all activities within our business, like sourcing woods and other materials locally and disposing of waste materials responsibly. We donate all of our sawdust to local Maine dairy farmers for use as cow bedding. And since there is no toxic glue in our beds, our scraps and cutoffs are used in wood stoves to fend off chilly Maine nights. Our non-toxic bunk beds are eco-friendly and a sustainable solution.

Our solid wood bunk beds are made from natural hardwoods. They are designed to be safe for kids, but are built for adults. They are strong, stable, sturdy and safe. While many adult bunk bed companies use soft woods like pine, we use poplar—a sustainable, locally sourced, renewable hardwood. North American poplar (or Tulipwood) is fine-grained and stable, making it easy to build with and well-suited for high-quality finishing. Hard Maple and American Cherry are available on special request.

We use oversized bed rails and 3 1/4” square corner posts. Except for architectural bolts used to attach the rails to the corner frames and unexposed structural screws used to join the rails to the headboards and footboards, we do not use any metal in our beds: no metal plates, braces or angles that are frequently used to reinforce inferior products.

The mattress base on our beds is made from sheets of high-strength plywood. The plywood is rated by our supplier to hold 446 lbs per square foot (MOE or modules of elasticity). The bonding agent used within the plywood is NAUF-rated (No Added Urea Formaldehyde)”. We do not use particle board or composite materials in our beds.

Paints & Lacquers

As part of our passionate commitment to the safety of children and the environment, we only use CARB-compliant paints, stains and lacquers on our beds. Our finishes are Greenguard-certified, meet strict standards for indoor air quality, are fully compliant with environmental standards set by the California Air Resources Board, and are formaldehyde-free. They complement clean living environments with negligible emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Our 18 most popular “Maine” Colors, all from Benjamin Moore Paints, can be see in the "Maine Colors" section. Color samples can be found at your local Benjamin Moore store.

We apply two coats of paint to our beds, and hand sand the bed after each coat is applied. We finish the bed with a water-based clear lacquer that protects the finish and minimizes smudges and scratches.

Our lacquer is a technically advanced, Greenguard-certified, water borne coating for interior wood surfaces. It is based on breakthrough proprietary resin technology that produces no hazardous off-gassing. Due to the water-based technology, our lacquer is fully compliant with stringent regulations set by the California Air Resources Board.

If you prefer to see the natural beauty of wood, our lacquer can be applied to showcase the grain of the wood while providing a long-lasting, scratch resistant finish. The lacquer protects the wood while enabling a depth and clarity to the finish that endures over time. Our specialized finishing process produces a highly durable, water-resistant, and easily maintained wood surface.
